Course Description:

Bienvenue a la classe de Francais! Welcome to French Class! Learning a second can be challenging, but the rewards are endless. Understanding French plays an important role in your growth as a global citizen, not to mention it can help you appreciate a fundamental piece of the Canadian identity. Imagine having the knowledge and confidence to travel across Canada, able to speak both of our country’s official languages!

Instructional Methods:

Variety is the key! If it’s fun and it helps the learning we’ll be doing it. We will use CD’s, videos, and written information, and of course everyone’s favorite: games! Activities will start simple and gradually move to real-life tasks, as you get comfortable with the pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. At the same time you’ll develop strategies to help the learning along, one of them being, getting used to hearing the teacher speak French.

Learning Outcomes:

The content of the course will be presented in such a way as to help students develop a number of French language skills. These include:

• Listening comprehension (e.g., audio conversations, videos, French instructions).
• Oral production (small and large group conversation, repeated grammar and vocabulary exercises).
• Reading comprehension (decoding unfamiliar vocabulary, responding to French text, reading aloud).
• Written production (formulation of simple phrases, presentation of basic linguistic elements).
