About Vis Comm:

The Visual Communications component offered at Alexandra Junior High School provides students a chance to explore various career opportunities found in industries associated with visual communication. It will be based on five themes that use the following:

• Photographic Editing and Manipulation
• Stop-motion Animation
• Programming and Game Design
• 3-D Graphic Design
• Video Production

Students will be provided with foundation modules for each of the themes so that they will, in the future, be able to continue on with other modules in the Career and Technology strands.

Each theme will have a variety of experiences and activities for the students to accomplish. The experiences and activities will be designed to attract and maintain student interest. When each theme has been completed the student will have completed several projects that will become part of their portfolio.

Course Outline:

The class will begin with an introduction to the day’s activities. The student will then work through the lesson with guided assistance from the teacher facilitator. If a student misses a lesson they will be expected to briefly acquaint themselves with the missed material during the lunch period or after school.

Students will work as individuals and groups, each working on projects in a particular theme. At the end of a module, the students rotate to a different theme until several projects in each theme are completed.

Evaluation:

Student’s daily work (Projects, Assignments) will account for 80% of their mark. During the course of the projects, and at the teacher’s discretion, participation, attitude, lab expectations and group processes marks can be produced for each student within their group. This 20% gives the student a mark out of 100%.
